Dancing Calligraphy boutique by David Ho Design Studio, Taipei – Taiwan

As the retail space is only 4.6 meters wide, David wittingly utilized the walls as a display case for the abundant stationery items. The wall, with its dark gray color, creates a unique backdrop for the colorful pens and hand writing samples, and allow for a variety of color-organized products to be displayed.

Aesop store by Knight Associates, Wellington – New Zealand

The interior design, created by Auckland-based architecture practice Knight Associates, sees an infusion of timber, captured by a sales counter and a sink – respectively featuring an aged brass top and sink with faucets – and paired with parquet flooring. A ceiling and walls dipped in alabaster paint provide a fitting backdrop, framing also the large windows that allow in floods of daylight.

The design of the speakeasy carries through the colors and character of the yogurt shop and the historic wood-frame building that houses both establishments. Upstairs, sunny yellows and blues convey charm and hospitality; downstairs, glamorous gold and rich navy act as their sultry, adult versions. Dark wood and painted tin ceilings add to the effect.

The main feature of the space comes from the choice to use only two colors (black and white) and few materials (iron, wired glass and resin). The workspace (graphic workshop and tattoo workshop) are white coloured, on the contrary the waiting room is black coloured.

For cabin of American country style, the light color wood flooring and ceiling presents together with the fabric sofa a cozy and free atmosphere. Cabin of rainforest style presents a Movie Set, a short-journey-like space that belongs to explorers.

The assortment of goods are displayed on a modern black iron stand, which is not only convenient for shoppers, but also attracts passing guests to stop and take a look. Next to the “Little Bazaar”, a spiral staircase with ample lighting on top uses the green belt background it creates to lead people into different levels of spatial narratives.

As the signature dish implies, the overall design was inspired by the po-boy dives of New Orleans- high volume sandwich shops popular with working class “poor boys” of the day. The historic neighborhood shops are simple yet elaborate with memorabilia, mahogany wood, cement tiles and long central counters for service.
