Straits Clan club by Takenouchi Webb, Singapore

Nestled in a part of town once rife with clan associations that helped to build the island state’s economic success, the club references their history through a myriad of design elements. Local design practice Takenouchi Webb has created a welcoming atmosphere, captured in a palette of onyx, concrete, rattan and lush tropical greenery that effortlessly ties in with the neighbourhood.

To realize the intention of the store to provide the freshest vegetables possible, the glass-walled “FRESH ROOM,” which itself serves as a refrigerator, is placed in the center as a unique and innovative attempt to keep the freshness of seasonal produce. The room is equipped with a special air conditioner designed to control temperature and prevent dew condensation.

Projections on floor and walls create a wide array of simulated environments. During the night the area is turned into a dance club. inSports follows a new trend in Chinese retail where live action and participation becomes an integral part of the retail experience.

The store has a industrial feel, largely defined by exposed utility pipes that run along the ceiling and an expansive steel grid. Furnishings comprise of a modular system of wooden boxes that provide highly flexible display and storage space, but also make up – in a stacked formation, obviously – an elevated walkway along the entire length of the façade.
