The Fairmont Penthouse by Inhouse, South Africa – Cape Town

The astounding circular stairwell allows easy access to the breath-taking rooftop which has exceptional views of the Sea Point surroundings. Made of strongly curved steel coated in black and floated on a marble plinth, the stairwell was designed to “make the journey to this area of the apartment more profound, thanks to the introduction of a sculptural element”.

Kunjani Wines estate by Haldane Martin, Stellenbosch – South Africa

A round eight-seater dining table with a copper disc on top of black stained timber is situated at the intersection between the entrance and main dining space. Haldane Martin’s new Sim-Ply dining chairs in grey leather and red lacquer surround the dining table. The table is framed by a four-tiered brass halo ring chandelier overhead – a contemporary expression of a traditional farmhouse candle chandelier.

A comination of Birch plywood and expanded steel mesh was used. Design elements from the corporate identity, like the bold colours and angled lines, were incorporated as key features in the fixture set to carry the brand personality through the design.

To achieve this combination of heritage, class and contemporary style, the Creative Shop design team incorporated rich wooden finishes into the feature walls, reception counters and coffee bar area, and contrasted this understated elegance with pops of bright red perspex and exposed strip lighting to add a bit subtle of rock and roll style to the space.

The brand’s distinctive colour scheme of blue, white and grey dominates every floor. The circular logo, prominent on the ground floor, persists on the first and second in the form of circular ceiling pendants that lower the lighting. The open layout, transparent walls and four-metre-high ceilings foster ease of access, create a spacious atmosphere, and help to ensure that full use is made of the natural light from the building’s sizable windows.

Whaam brought this through by designing two select meeting areas into the stand for exclusive engagement. We translated the grandness of a typical Hilton lobby area by introducing a welcome desk contrasted against elevated walls and a suspended halo bulkhead to emphasise the new brand identity.

The annual ultra marathon is billed as one of the worlds most beautiful road races and attracts a large number of entries. The largest running-related expo in the Western Cape attracts over 50 000 visitors over 3 days and showcases the latest in running and fitness equipment and apparel.

Intricate timber-clad ceilings, supported with structured wooden beams, serve as a striking visual element in this space. Trees and shrubbery peer through the building’s large glass windows, not only offering ample light but welcoming nature as part of the overall design.

The most significant material used in the project is that of the Hulabond aluminum screens. Part of the client’s vision was to have break-way spaces from the main auditorium that would have a visual connection with the campus surroundings.

The client’s brief to Inhouse was to recreate the style of a luxurious New York corporate management office. It was important to steer away from the stark character of Urban Lime’s previous offices.

Striped Horse Muizenberg bar by Haldane Martin and Jurie Blomerus, Cape Town – South Africa

The design team specifically worked on the centrepiece bar, the bar back shelving and outdoor furniture, and the signage, all sponsored by Striped Horse. The rest of the interior was designed by the bar owner, Jurie Blomerus. The materials and lighting of the bar were chosen to complement the rest of Jurie’s interior’s raw and distressed finishes.

The participating creatives were asked to produce a piece that invites the audience to ask similar questions. The exhibition includes work by Chuma Maweni, Otto du Plessis, Dokter and Misses, Stanislaw Trzebinski and Madida Fani.

Spatial dimensions presented another issue that affected the design process, in that the offices are not overly large. The selected design scheme called for the inclusion of a deep, dark palette to create an air of sophistication.
