The Sicilian is an old-style Italian restaurant located in New South Wales, Australia. As the brand name suggests, the design borrows heavily from the gentlemen’s style of 1940’s gangster films. We imagine this to be a place where mafia bosses patronise. The typography of the logo is inspired by engravings on firearms.

The concrete furniture stands in immediate contrast to the white existing building. In the center aisle, a large communal dining table acts as a more public dining space, while large monolithic concrete booths provide a more intimate dining setting.

The gorgeous colour palette gives the space a stylish bold moody feel because of the contrast with the black paint. In the main restaurant area, original features such as the stunning parquet floor have been lovingly preserved, creating a grand yet homely milieu. This is luxury turned up a notch. On the wall opposite the restaurant‚ is a surface covered along its full width with mirror panels.

There has been no expense spared with the interior of La Perla which mixes old with new. All the furniture is modern and stylish. The main feature of the restaurant is the LED lighting. This really
lights up the room and sets the mood. The LED lighting can slowly colour change over the night, changing the atmosphere, ‘look’ and the ‘feel’ of the restaurant.

CWA worked with the client to brainstorm a vision for the restaurant and proposed a total design concept which embraced all visual elements. This included proposing the name ‘Paperfish’ to underscore the restaurant’s function and to align with the concept of treating the plain white architecture as thin leaves of curving drywall to evoke fluidity, water flowing and pooling, and to give the sense of being immersed below the sea.

Upon entering Hambar, one is greeted by a full-height showcase of theatrically illuminated suspended cured meats. Beyond, the majestic volume of sparkling surfaces, including a full height imposing wine cellar, is tempered by masculine touches of leather and walnut, all within a convivial and bustling urban dining scene.

The concept of meeting and confluence also applies in the choice of materials: glass, steel, wood, grès and plaster create a cosmopolitan environment but at the same time welcoming and harmonious. Most of the furniture is made on the project, from the bar counter, to the wooden paneling of the back bench, to the leather sofa which incorporates the soft lines of the paneling behind the plaster.
