M stand café by Atelier XÜK, Shanghai – China

The continuous terrazzo floor extends onto the wall surface, emphasizing on the depth of the space. The black Corian counter and polished stainless steel panels break down and lead the line of view at the middle and background, with the mirror at the very end of folding the space and pulling the sight back to the street.

Directly from the outdoor stairs, first stepping into the light forest on the second floor. Under the soft lighting of the light ceiling, the matte PVC pipe encloses a circular dining hall and two private dining room surrounded by polycarbonate panels. Circular, diffuse lighting, white tones make you losing sense of texture, scale, and direction to this space.

The pump and mechanical details are intentionally exposed within a metal casework. An old wood beam of the original building is exposed as well to give a contrast between old and new. To mimic the texture of the coffee machine, the designers choose to use the white stone as the material of the counter from the facade all the way into interior space.

We collected the wood slab, planned and rolled them into many small wooden pillars with same size combining with iron frames to set some kinds of the module.

Façade design emphasizes on the North-east side, which is the main approach of building. The inner skin is composed of steel structure and glazing while the outer skin consists of the lace oblique panel on steel frame. The outer skin is positioned away from inner skin, creating a semi-exterior space.

This Cuesta Blanca experience starts at the facade which screams Luxury and impact to insure any one walking by won’t resist entering the store. The materialization of the facade required a mixture of mediums; brass, glass, mirror and gold led to contrast with the old brickwall of the mall structure.

We produced furniture and finished interior by using wood materials normally used for substrate of furniture and interior finish for reducing the cost. Paint finish with rough texture is applied, so that it “weathers nicely as a taste” along with the time, rather than just becoming “old” after the completion.

Externally, the walls were found covered by different layers of paint and mortar. Internally, a brick wall covered with tiles, hid the original ashlar and masonry walls. Two levels of false ceilings placed at different heights prevented the view of the original wooden structure which composed the roof of the building.
