2 Cups bar by Daipu Architects, Chongqing – China

Architect Dai Pu’s solution is a voluptuous wooden ridge that appears to rise from a concrete floor. He translated Yuzhong’s undulating, irregular, alpine landscape into human-scale furnishings that were designed digitally, CNC-carved from solid wood and assembled on site. The topography serves as partitions, bar footrests and a large bench.

A once fragmented set of packaging was overhauled to create a singular voice, confident yet appealing, with a much more powerful and consistent shelf presence. Moving into cans allowed 56 to compete at the level of the competition. Sales of beer both at the taproom and in retail have both drastically increased since the updated brand launched.

The packaging designs went through many stages and iterations in order to capture the essence of Burning Man. This sense of eclecticism, creative expression and camaraderie is what inspired the design of the beer labels as every brew is uniquely named and has a story behind it.

Bold shapes combined with a discord of colour and minimal type gave the line a nod and a push into the Pacific Northwest essence we wanted to achieve, but without the predictability. Printed on flat laminated labels with a metalized bopp added sheen and created a subtle effect with a bold impact when the light hit it just right.

The naming and design is inspired by Cornish provenance and the graphic is inspired by the Celtic stone carvings that are to be found in the area. This is a new generation stout that combines the best of the old with added complexity, flavour and refreshment of the new wave craft – the design appeals to both markets.

The name literally means shadow in French but when pronounced sounds like the French for Amber. The name therefore has a juxtaposition of meaning which we represented in the light and shade of the design. The ‘O’ sits in a theme of the brewery’s product identities of lettered labels meaning Ombre sits neatly next to it’s brother Alias.

Inspired by Origami, the irregularly folded stainless steel sheets are the main elements of the shop-front facade, the beer wall and the bar counter. Laser-cutting circles grow large from bottom up to the top on the one side of the sheets, lights leaking out of the circles cast spots and reflection on the other side.

The idea expressed by a “beer” arteries, which pass through the whole bar and transport drink through its “vessels”. To do this, we used copper pipes which unite the beer towers, extend through walls and transformed into light.

The originality of the beer tap handles is achieved by slicing off four sides of a cherry blossom branch to create an octagonal shape. The irregularity in length and color of the wooden handles adds to the unique character of the bar.
