Amical Cafe – Bistro by Lab4 architects, Larissa – Greece

The concept design makes a reference to traditional Parisian bistros of 20’s in combination with chic style features which create a mostly contemporary result full of “story narrations”. The basic materials which are used within design are white chevron tile, oak wood, chess tiles and colors such as pale beige, vivid turquoise, white and red – Bordeaux.

As a relatively new company, Autopilot wanted to maintain the atmosphere of a ‘start-up’ company; exuberant, positive, not too flashy but still inspiring and welcoming. To articulate this culture, Morphos began by using exposed concrete flooring and ceilings to create a raw and modern base which we could build on with quirky and modern details.

Our assignment was to create a “First Class” lounge downstairs that would be very appealing and draw patrons away from the very crowded upstairs bar area. By creating this area the owners created twice the usable space without moving or increasing monthly overhead.

The restaurant interior design will be most likely comparable to the traditional alleys of old Damascus. All these elements enhance and reflect the ancient bazaar theme in a contemporary setting. As an imitation of the original design of the souk, the ceiling features a patterned arched iron rips that shelter the restaurant space.

The Star Ferry, a unique and elegant icon of Hong Kong’s past and present, became the foundation for every design detail, including the custom designed furniture and lighting. Nostalgia is further evoked by colours and scents: Carmine reds and bottle greens — hues seen on the hull of Hong Kong’s ferries, fishing boats, delivery trucks, and temples —and apothecary-inspired toiletries and custom aroma of sandalwood and amber notes, to deliver an authentic sense of place.

Strategic use of inexpensive finishes such as decorative wallcovering, colorful paint, exposed concrete floors and graphics helped to create a more playful environment. A jogging track was also created around the building’s core as the main circulation path to promote health and wellness, an important element to the company’s philosophy.

A fine balancing of modern and vintage touches results in a unique identity of the Greek traditional “Bakaliko” (a traditional delicatessen store), presented in a contemporary twist. The famous Greek summer, with the clear blue skies, the aroma of lemon and orange trees, the olives, are represented through colors and decorative carefully chosen, in order to bring out the Greek easy going feeling.

The venue has very much retained the original interior, including the checkered flooring, tables with brass tops, and matching pendant lamps. The rebranding follows a new collab between Ace Hotel and award-winning chef Michael Cimarusti.
