Eden Locke hotel interior by Grzywinski + Pons, Edinburgh

Tasked to transform one of these 18th-century Georgian terraced houses into the 72-room hotel, the studio chose the tropical material palette to contrast with the buildings. The warm colour of the Scottish light that floods in from the large windows also prompted the choice.

The interior is a black and white composition as well, warmed by triangle-shaped elements made of natural plywood. Both the triangles and the shape of a sport cone further connect with the letter V in LODOVNIA’s logo, which makes the architectural result consistent with the ice cream shop’s visual identity system.

Designing the concept was both an exploration exercise into 80-90’s asian pop culture as it was re-imagining asian fusion so it would stand on its own as Canberra’s go-to place. Designed to be a flexible all-day dining asian eating house, the venue had to allow for counter-side lunches and asian tapas dining to late night whisky, sake bar and cocktails.

‘Flower pavilion’ by Laisné Roussel for Lyon Architecture Biennale, Lyon – France

As part of the month-long event, Paris-based practice Laisné Roussel has constructed the “Flower pavilion” — an inhabitable installation inspired by greenhouses and the vibrant vegetation they contain. Inside the structure, a double spiral staircase leads visitors through a vertically organized garden to an observation platform designed for contemplation.

All the tables were handcrafted from solid wood obtained from old oak beams from old Tuscan farmhouses, a type of wood very special with its distinguished strong consistency and with its own various colored grain. The Chairs and the long Wall Bench at the Ground Floor were covered with an intense blue Ecological Leather, color used to recall the color of the Ocean, undisputed protagonist in the city of San Sebastian.

We wanted the walls to look light and avoid the heavy feeling of diving surfaces. We therefore created 30/30 cm prototype wall where we could combine wood, polycarbonate panels and led lights to see how they cooperate. The result of our miniature wall was a success and a prototype became reality.

Use the design of the product displayed as inspiration for color, texture and form. Use the storage/container of shoe boxes as a focal point and make it an interactive part of the retail area.

The biggest challenge we had to face was to create a warm, friendly atmosphere inside a spacious, open plan space with little room for interventions and changes of the existing shell. In the same time, we had to redefine the operation of the restaurant that had to adjust to the multiple needs of the users of the mall throughout the day and night.
