The Fairmont Penthouse by Inhouse, South Africa – Cape Town

The astounding circular stairwell allows easy access to the breath-taking rooftop which has exceptional views of the Sea Point surroundings. Made of strongly curved steel coated in black and floated on a marble plinth, the stairwell was designed to “make the journey to this area of the apartment more profound, thanks to the introduction of a sculptural element”.

Original marble floors have been reinstalled across the ground floor, alongside wood and marble wall panels. The space was opened up to create a seamless flow between the lobby and the restaurant and bar, with floor-to-ceiling wooden screens used to create subdivisions.

The design is derived from the name of the hotel and the character of the city. The »Domizil« (= home) exudes a good feeling, resulting in a bright mood and rousing confidence. The peaceful effect of the Neckar River and its colours are incorporated into a harmonious concept.

The standout design elements of the hotel’s public areas are the industrial exposed ceilings, concrete floors, and large, colourful modern artworks. The overall materials palette throughout is natural with an urban edge – featuring polished and matte concrete, untreated and varnished wood, and rough and smooth travertine.

Blurring the boundaries between the hotel and the zoological garden, the designers introduce a cast of abstract ‘zoo objets d’art’ to invite more than a touch of whimsy and fantasy to the space.
