KARESANSUI Hotel by Yiduan Shanghai Interior Design, Shangri-La – China

There are 15 guest rooms in total, in addition, there is a lobby, a restaurant and a tea room. Unique indoor design could be found in each guests room, while giving guests great sense of privacy, it shows the beauty of new oriental Zen. One of the buildings keep the original Tibetan structure, and local Tibetan elements are added to its architectural and interior design.

Some cabins are like the Thai silk of southeast Asia, while being green inside and outside which presents a feeling of wooded uninhabited island, the wood material used conveys a sense of belonging. For cabin of American country style, the light color wood flooring and ceiling presents together with the fabric sofa a cozy and free atmosphere. Cabin of rainforest style presents a Movie Set, a short-journey-like space that belongs to explorers.

The front side is gradually opened to be a welcome main approach of the building. In the courtyard, the pillar-alike vertical fins represent the traditional Thai temple pillar. At the end of the group of pillars, reflecting glass wall is designed and situated in order to create a visual continuous hall.

The Yays – Crane Apartment by Edward van Vliet, Amsterdam – Netherlands

As the crane has been out of commission for so many years, with its fate uncertain, this project deserves applause for its reuse of such an unorthodox space. At the hotel’s opening ceremony, the last crane operator, commented on how happy he was to see the old structure get a ‘new life.’

The astounding circular stairwell allows easy access to the breath-taking rooftop which has exceptional views of the Sea Point surroundings. Made of strongly curved steel coated in black and floated on a marble plinth, the stairwell was designed to “make the journey to this area of the apartment more profound, thanks to the introduction of a sculptural element”.

Original marble floors have been reinstalled across the ground floor, alongside wood and marble wall panels. The space was opened up to create a seamless flow between the lobby and the restaurant and bar, with floor-to-ceiling wooden screens used to create subdivisions.

The design is derived from the name of the hotel and the character of the city. The »Domizil« (= home) exudes a good feeling, resulting in a bright mood and rousing confidence. The peaceful effect of the Neckar River and its colours are incorporated into a harmonious concept.

A completely new building was built in the space where the service rooms used to be to house the rest of the guest rooms: Blue, Green, Pink and Yellow which are vertically arranged around the central patio. With terraces and a harmonious chromatic palette, each guest room creates environments in tune with the complex.

A stripped-down aesthetic and a palette of bright hues allude to works of Russian avant-garde artists. This motif is further elaborated through interplay of ceiling slopes and geometric wall treatments. Soviet era light fixtures, furniture, and tiles, all sourced by Pastcode continue the theme of Russia’s 20th century heritage.

The standout design elements of the hotel’s public areas are the industrial exposed ceilings, concrete floors, and large, colourful modern artworks. The overall materials palette throughout is natural with an urban edge – featuring polished and matte concrete, untreated and varnished wood, and rough and smooth travertine.

The dominant tone of master bedroom is the calm brown and gray color, and the texture of furniture is a mixture of gold, wood, knitting wool and leather. Matched with the abstract carpet, it achieved a harmonious sense of depth.

Moscow-based studio Sundukovy Sisters employs the geometric shapes and functionality characteristic of the Bauhaus, only to subvert its principles with fantastical ornaments, a bright palette and luxurious materials. Blurring the boundaries between the hotel and the zoological garden, the designers introduce a cast of abstract ‘zoo objets d’art’ to invite more than a touch of whimsy and fantasy to the space.
