Charlotte’s Speakeasy by studioBIG, Farmingdale – New York

The design of the speakeasy carries through the colors and character of the yogurt shop and the historic wood-frame building that houses both establishments. Upstairs, sunny yellows and blues convey charm and hospitality; downstairs, glamorous gold and rich navy act as their sultry, adult versions. Dark wood and painted tin ceilings add to the effect.

The accent in materials orientated on broken tiles on the bar zone, abstract mural that delimits two sitting areas, and round gypsum light sculptures on the walls. And the supplement for the interior is minimalist style branding that continues laconic atmosphere of the design.

Akiba Dori features seven unique storefronts serving Japanese street food, baked goods, coffee, a bar serving everything from Japanese beer to bottles of wine, a pizzeria named Tokyopolitan which serves Tokyo-style Neapolitan pizzas baked in a wood fired oven, and last but not least, a full-fledged arcade room for some old skool fun and banter.

The result is a clean, crisp, sleek design, with Scandinavian influences. A soft palette of green and grey with pale wood furnishings brings much-needed light to the space. Subtle references to the bar’s location under the arches of a railway bridge are made through the use of wall tiling and a mix of classical and contemporary lighting, brass fittings and banquette seating.

The space is full of dark grey detailing: such as constructions of black metal, the patterns of grey tiles were partially used, the hanging wires, concrete bar top as well as the chairs. A shade of gold colouring of the chandeliers and bar equipment was invoked to liven up this monochrome colour game.

The industrial theme is continued across the additional two levels. The mezzanine, a bright and cosy space filled with custom made tables and banquet seats is located above the kitchen. The basement, connected to the ground floor by a dark steel staircase, is designed to hold events such as concerts, poetry nights and book readings.

Architect Dai Pu’s solution is a voluptuous wooden ridge that appears to rise from a concrete floor. He translated Yuzhong’s undulating, irregular, alpine landscape into human-scale furnishings that were designed digitally, CNC-carved from solid wood and assembled on site. The topography serves as partitions, bar footrests and a large bench.

A unique pattern was created and used around the interiors surrounding, from the use of the different metals to form layers and help enhance the height of this restaurant. We have decorated the restaurant and bar with an Art Deco theme in mind, with a combination of gold and different variety of stones for a sophisticated and elegant finish.

They revamped the existing plating bar and beverage bar by using natural material that are simple and not expensive, such as, bamboo weave. Wooden pillar with iron border was painted in brass and smoking black colour which can make the main counter look sexier and more interesting.

Unusual elements within the design include the bar which is 28-metres long inside a bandstand, and the food stands, which are modern beach huts where the panelling has been designed to make the total appearance like an axonometric drawing (they look 3D but they are 2D). To further compliment the 1920s English Riviera brief, we took traditional iconography and re-interpreted it with a modern twist.

Bar Elce is a welcoming place where brown tones prevail, alternating with the blue of the counter. The seats are in light wood and the stools are dark as the ceiling. Comfortable beige sofas invite guests to relax and enjoy a cup of coffee. Original warm light lamps descend from the ceiling.

An environment with impeccable aesthetics, with light blue-green chairs, light walls and floors and a refined dark counter, which contrasts perfectly with the rest.

Our concept has found the contemporary reading of recognized Italian elements, such as the classic Renaissance paintings. To them, we add a typical Carioca identity. In the environment, paintings and humorous objects translate the proposal.
