La Rambla Camper Store by Kéré Architecture, Barcelona – Spain

February 24th, 2017 by Camra’s blog

Known as one of the more important shopping streets in the historic center of Barcelona, the Rambla Cataluña is popular for strolling and window-shopping. The design for the Camper store uses this classic pedestrian experience to introduce a subtle narrative that activates and transforms the architecture as the visitor departs from the street and travels into the space.

At the store front, the architecture presents itself as a basic modular shelving system that is devoid of color and texture in order to highlight the objects displayed inside. This simple construction lines the interior of the space, producing the effect of phenomenal depth.

As the visitor passes from the street into the depths of the store, the regularity of the system begins to deform, curve, and physically expand the space. The components of the shelving begin to invert, creating a playful accordion-pattern of shadow and light. In this way, the products displayed also become an integral part of the pattern, rather than appearing as something separate from the architecture.
