Le Super Qualité restaurant by David Dworkind, Montreal – Canada

January 28th, 2017 by Camra’s blog

Known as one of North America’s most cosmopolitan cities, Montreal is home to a plethora of nationalities that have contributed a great deal to a highly varied culinary scene that befits its stature. Recently set up by Guillaume Lozeau and Jennfier Zachanowich, two young chefs and entrepreneurs with a background in the food industry, le Super Qualité – what’s not to love about the playfully audacious moniker? – is a funky and unpretentious Indian diner in the Buzzing Rosemont-la petite patrie district. The duo have extensively traveled across Southeast Asia, and run both an import business of spices from the region and an Asian catering business. Looking to expand the latter operations, they decided to a proper diner. Le Super Qualité occupies a modest ground floor unit with large windows that provide passers-by onubstructed views of the playful interior design by Montreal-based architect David Dworkind.

Largely inspired by India’s renowned sleeper trains, the palette has a distinct exotic edge, and includes textured blue wood, walls dipped in a bright blue, and ornate tile flooring. Adding even more character is a street food car that’s incorporated into the bar, and a shelving rack that’s suspended by chains and intended as a nod to the beds of the sleeper cars. As a finishing touch, authentic Indian Tiffin Carriers have been used as decorative light fixtures, backing up rows of sunken ceiling lights. Guests are seated on stools along the windows and bar, but there’s also a section directly opposite which features a number of tables and chairs. So, what’s cookin’ at le super qualité? The menu is concise but quite varied, featuring popular Indian snacks, such as fried okra, Masala Dosa and Dahi Batata Puri, two types of Indian desserts, and a number of matching beverages, including beers, liquors and Indian soft drinks.
